What are some safe scanning techniques for Raman Scanning?
Raman sampling techniques to use when scanning unknown and/or suspected explosive/ignitable substances.
- Use Scan Delay - Use the scan delay feature to set a count down from 'Scan' button press to when the laser fires. This allows the user to set the device in a position to scan, press scan, and move away from the area.
- Set Laser Power and Exposure to minimal values - Start with low laser power and exposure. Then incrementally increase power and/or exposure to achieve suitable Raman peaks for identification.
- Use a little material as possible. Raman requires a visible amount of material to scan. A small amount to cover the bottom of a 4ml vial will suffice.
- Scan with the vial cover removed or only loosely attached. In the event of ignition, this would minimize pressure.
- Do not scan with dark backgrounds or on cellulose paper. Dark color and cellulose can collect laser heat and become a source of ignition.
- Avoid scanning darkly colored solid or powered materials. Dark colors collect laser heat and can result in an ignition source.
